The next morning, Kendra went straight to the bathing chamber and let the cold shower run over her body as she soaped up.

“Lady, can I fix you a bath?” Garen spoke, as he approached her with a towel and a smile.

“No, thank you. I have to get dressed for training. I don’t want to be late.”

“Come, Lady. Let me dry you and then help you dress.” He dried her quickly and followed her into her bedroom.

She checked on Kellen, and he opened his eyes, really seeing her for the first time in days.

“My Lady, how long have I been ill?” He rasped.

“Don’t you worry about that, you just get better. I miss you.” She kissed his forehead. “I have to go train, but Aidan and Garen will be here to care for you.”

“I’m sorry, My Lady.” His eyes flooded.

“Shhh, baby, don’t cry.” She sat on the side of the bed and pulled him up into her arms, hugging him close for a moment. He clutched her weakly, burying his face in her neck.

She lay him back down gently, pushing his hair back from his face.

“You stay here and rest and try to eat so you can get your strength back.”

“Yes, My Lady.”

She put a soft kiss on his lips and stood. She turned and found Garen and Aidan in the room, staring at her in adoration, and she swallowed hard.

“I have to get dressed.” She made for the wardrobe, and Garen beat her to it, pulling out a leather training uniform.

They dressed her tenderly and fed her before she left.

She wasn’t late, but they were ready to start so she fell in quickly and readied herself. When training was over, her friends were eager to hear how Kellen was doing.

“I have postponed your feast until next week, Kendra. I know you wouldn’t enjoy it if you were worrying about Kellen.” Nera said.

“Thank you, My Lady.” Kendra bowed. “You are always so thoughtful, and I appreciate it.”

“I am very happy, indeed, to have a warrior who appreciates her Queen as you do, Kendra.” Nera smiled and chucked her on the chin. Cassie sputtered and fell silent when she got the eye from her Monarch. “We must get you some more slaves. I think this situation has illustrated why you need more than one. You all take care of each other.”

“Yes, My Lady.” Kendra bowed. “May I acquire them in my own time, though?”

“Of course, Kendra.” Nera drank deeply of a cup of water. “I understand you have Aidan and Garen with you for now. Cassandra was generous as they are both a delight. Aidan does this clever thing…”

Cassie stared at her Queen with narrowed eyes as the others laughed.

“I’m going home.” Cassie turned and left.

“Come, Kendra, you have sword work to do today,” Kara called out.

Kendra excused herself from the Queen, wincing because she knew her arm would be like a lead weight before Kara was through.

It was lunch time when they finished, and Kendra bid Kara good day. She went home and spent a long while with Kellen before he drifted off to sleep again.
